The end of World War II thrust the U.S. into the position of world leadership. While dealing with its own post-war readjustments, the U.S. joined with other allies in occupying Germany and Japan and in organizing the United Nations. A breakdown in U.S.-Soviet relations launched a Cold War and generated a renewed fear of communism at home and abroad. America "fought" the Cold War by providing massive aid to Europe and through economic, political, and military involvement in East Asia and the Middle East.
